Lakers Coach JJ Redick Optimistic About Jarred Vanderbilt’s Return Ahead of New Season

Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick expressed optimism regarding the potential return of forward Jarred Vanderbilt as the team gears up for the upcoming NBA season. Speaking to reporters after the Lakers’ October 12 practice, Redick provided an update on Vanderbilt’s recovery process, which has been ongoing since February due to injury.

According to Redick, Vanderbilt has not experienced any setbacks and continues to make steady progress in his rehabilitation. “Vanderbilt is following our ramp-up protocol,” Redick said, as reported by ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. “He has not done any contact work. He has not participated in any non-contact [drills] in practice, but we’re still trying to target the beginning of the season, and we haven’t had any setbacks.”

While Vanderbilt has yet to engage in full contact drills, his progress has been encouraging enough for the Lakers to remain hopeful about his availability for the start of the season. Redick emphasized that they are being cautious with his return, ensuring that he follows a step-by-step protocol to avoid any further issues. The team is aiming to have him ready for the season opener, although his full participation in practices will be determined by his continued progress.

In addition to providing an update on Vanderbilt’s health, Redick also shared that he has crafted a defensive strategy tailored to Vanderbilt’s unique skill set. Known for his defensive versatility, the 6-foot-8 forward with a 7-foot-1 wingspan has the ability to guard multiple positions. His combination of size, strength, and athleticism allows him to match up effectively against frontcourt players while also having the agility to defend guards and perimeter players.

Redick revealed that he has designed a zone defensive package that plays to Vanderbilt’s strengths, allowing the Lakers to maximize his defensive impact when he returns. Vanderbilt’s presence on the defensive end will be crucial for the Lakers as they look to solidify their defense and make a deep playoff run.

Vanderbilt, a key acquisition for the Lakers in recent seasons, has established himself as one of the team’s most versatile defenders. His return would bolster the Lakers’ frontcourt depth and add a valuable defensive presence as they seek to contend in a highly competitive Western Conference.

With the season fast approaching, all eyes will be on Vanderbilt’s continued progress as he works toward a highly anticipated return to the court.
