‘Norris lacks elite mentality of ruthless Verstappen to win F1 title’

Lando Norris’s performance at the United States Grand Prix in Austin has sparked debate about his readiness to contend for the Formula 1 2024 Drivers’ Championship. Norris, who finished fourth after receiving a five-second penalty for overtaking Max Verstappen beyond track limits, has been scrutinized for lacking the ‘ruthless’ mentality that defines champions like Verstappen.

The incident has divided fans and experts alike, with former drivers Martin Brundle and Jenson Button suggesting that the FIA’s overtaking rules need clarity. Nevertheless, the key takeaway for many was not the penalty itself, but what it revealed about Norris’s mindset. David Schiavone, the editor-in-chief of Total Motorsport, highlighted this in a recent discussion, pointing out that Norris’s approach lacks the aggressive edge seen in the best drivers.

Schiavone cited a previous race in Hungary where Norris hesitated over team orders concerning swapping positions with his teammate Oscar Piastri. According to him, that moment exemplified a critical gap in Norris’s mindset. “If Norris is to be one of those ruthless drivers, he needs to be saying ‘sorry, I’m winning,’” Schiavone remarked. This contrasted sharply with Verstappen’s relentless drive, who is known for his willingness to seize any opportunity, often bending racing strategies to his will.

The commentary has raised questions about Norris’s development under the spotlight. While there is no denying his technical skills and racecraft, which are on par with the elite, the criticism centers on his perceived lack of a killer instinct—the decisive edge that can make the difference between a podium and a championship win. As the 2024 season unfolds, Norris will need to prove he can evolve beyond a talented competitor into a championship-caliber driver, embracing a mentality that demands nothing less than victory.
